As part of gathering knowledge, contacts, and content, Lee Saunders, head of Content at Nishlis, suggests four action points you can do today in 30 minutes over a coffee.

Stay updated with legal developments: Are you following the business press in your jurisdiction and those of your clients? Law firms should monitor legal news and developments to identify emerging trends, changes in legislation, and notable court decisions that may impact their clients.

Action point 1: Search for and follow 3 publications that you or your department should read for business or industry news.

Think big picture about what you do. This will help with your posts, awards and directory submissions.

Action point 2: Your grandmother has asked you about work and what are you working on right now? Write down a few simple sentences to explain a client’s struggles or issues at the moment. This is a starting point to build out a piece on trends. Start simple.

Showcase your humanity: A lawyer’s back story – overcoming adversity: first time to college, immigrant, carer, woman, special educational needs, minority, child of a survivor, etc there are many tales to tap into and lead with a character trait..that is useful for lawyering and building relationships.

Action point 3: The two people you work with the most. Do you know how they spend their free time and what values drive their non-work hours? Write them down.

Collaborate with industry influencers: Law firms can collaborate with influential individuals within the legal industry, such as legal scholars, renowned attorneys, or industry thought leaders.

Action point 4: Follow 3 law firms who are competitors/peers and 2 major accounting firms. Follow 2 major clients you want to attract.
